Task force looks at issues regarding new schools

By Chuck Kajer

Members of the New Prague Area Schools Strategic Growth Task Force have held three meetings to date, with their next meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19.

During their three meetings, members have had countless documents, figures, reports and opinions presented by New Prague School Board members and administrators. They've seen the results of a telephone survey taken in June asking residents about the failed May bond referendum, and examined enrollment figures and projections.

One of the highlights of the August 5 meeting was presentation of the results of the telephone survey, which was conducted by an independent firm in June. Three hundred registered voters were interviewed between June 21 and June 24.

The conclusion of the report said that the defeat was the result of three major issues: the controversy that developed when the district proposed building a school in Lonsdale, a failure by voters to understand why three schools needed to be built at the same time, and the cost of the bond proposal. The report states that if another bond proposal is placed on the ballot, the district must eliminate the Lonsdale controversy
