TCU pleased with MCA science results

The Tri-City United School Board celebrated and admitted it has more work to do after the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment results were released to the public on August 7.

The assessments test proficiency in math for grades 3 to 8 and 11; reading for grades 3 to 8 and 10; and science for 5th, 8th and once in high school. Superintendent Dr. Teri Preisler presented the results to the board at its regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 14.

The board celebrated the significant increases in test results across all grades in science. At the high school level, students scored 65.5 percent, above the state average of 56.3 percent. In grade eight, students scored 54.6 percent, significantly above the state average of 46.1 percent. Grade five students scored 64.4 percent compared to 54.9 percent at the state level.

Preisler attributed the gains to several factors. She said the district’s new science curriculum, the implementation of courses in Project Lead The Way and the significance of the teachers to have the students “do” science led to the increases.
