Tennis team tops Giants

New Prague High School's girls tennis team won its first match of the season Tuesday, Aug. 28, defeating Le Sueur-Henderson 5-2. New Prague is now 1-1 on the season.

Doubles continue to be a strong suit for the Trojans, as they swept all three matches. The team of Briana Skluzacek and Allison Stupica defeated their opponents 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. Evan O'Malley and Sara Lang took their No. 2 doubles match in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, and at No. 3 doubles, Amanda Powell and Megan Palma won in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.

The Trojans took two of four singles matches. Kelsey Stupica won her No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 2-1, following an injury forfeit, while Rena Kneeland won at No. 2 singles. 7-5, 6-1.

Alexis Johnson and Casey Heid lost their singles matches, at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

The Trojans were scheduled to resume action Tuesday at Mound-Westonka. On Thursday, Sept. 6, they open their Missota Conference schedule by hosting Shakopee at 4:15 p.m.

New Prague competes in the Waseca Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, then will have two conference matches, at home Tuesday, Sept. 11, against Holy Angels and at Hutchinson on Thursday, Sept. 13.
