Tesarek and Giesen are 2007 outstanding seniors

Both senior citizens honored in Scott County have one thing in common - humility. Being the center of attention for both Marge Tesarek of New Prague and Don Giesen of Union Hill was a bit uncomfortable. One could tell they were used to being behind-the-scenes, making things happen and silently leading with their gentle spirits.

But the limelight was cast upon them on Friday, July 27, at the Scott County Fairgrounds in Jordan when they were honored as 2007 Outstanding Scott County Senior Citizens.

During the presentation, Sen. Claire Robling sang their praises; those passing by the gazebo may have thought the volunteerism she talked about belonged to many people, not just two individuals who chose to make a difference, unassumingly giving heart and soul because they care about their community and those in need.

Marge Tesarek grew up as a city girl in Bloomington. But one would never guess the 93-year-old has been a fair exhibitor in the home activities building since the fair was held in the city of Jordan. Some years, she brought in more than 50 items. Needless to say, she has a collection of blue ribbons as well as champion honors on everything from quilts to vegetables and flowers to other crafts.

Nine years ago, Marge moved from St. Benedict to New Prague. She describes herself as a homemaker and loves gardening.
