Time for residents to step up

By Chuck Kajer,

Managing Editor

One week into the filing period for the New Prague City Council only two candidates have filed, both for the office of mayor. Incumbent Craig Sindelar will face a challenge from Jeff Drabant. No one has filed for the city council seats held by Jim Kratochvil and Duane Jirik.

At a time when New Prague is facing unprecedented growth, the lack of interest in these city council seats is unsettling. Important decisions face the council and the city in the next few years. Issues involving growth, parks, streets, water and wastewater utilities and more need to be given careful, deliberate thought.

Two months ago, on this page, The Times lamented the lack of interest in two Le Sueur County Commissioners seats. Only the two incumbents filed for office.

To date, neither Kratochvil nor Jirik have announced a decision on whether they will run. Both have served the city well, and both would undoubtedly continue to do so, but there are many other city residents who could also do a good job. It seems that, once again, apathy is playing a big role in local government.

When people aren't happy about taxes, city services or how the city does things, they seem to have plenty to say. But when these same people won't step up and volunteer their time, that says volumes more.
