Top spellers head to regional bee

Five students were crowned as the top spellers in their schools during the 2009 New Prague Area Schools District Spelling Bee at the New Prague High School auditorium Saturday, Jan. 31.

Winners came from the three elementary schools, St. Wenceslaus School and New Prague Middle School (NPMS), which each held a separate competition on January 31. Seventy-five students competed during the course of the day.

Champion, second and third place spellers from each school received medals. First through third place respectively were:

Raven Stream Elementary-Nathan Borchers, Zac Carney and (tie) Kortney Novak and Ellie Brown.

Eagle View Elementary-Tyler Codina, Taylor Sadusky and Alexa Calliguri.

Falcon Ridge Elementary-Jenny Schoenbauer, Lexi Huhta and (tie) Allie Norsteedt and Tamar Alsadi. St. Wenceslaus-Hallie O'Neill, Connor O'Rourke and Maggie Yetzer.

NP Middle School-Sophia Vilensky, Mikala Larson, and (tie) James Fuerniss, Jacob Klein and Brady Loose.

The five winners advance to the Regional Spelling Bee Tuesday, Mar. 3, at South Central College in North Mankato. Winners at the competition will continue to the May 26 and 27 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The competition at New Prague High School began at 8 a.m. and continued into the early afternoon. To compete students had to be under age 15. During the bee, students could ask that a word be repeated, used in a sentence, a definition of it, the part of speech it is from and its language of origin.
