Township voters go to the polls Tuesday

Voters go to the polls Tuesday, March 7, in seven area townships to choose township clerks and supervisors.

In two of these townships, this could be the last township election to be held in March.

Belle Plaine Township, in Scott County, and Lanesburgh Township, in Le Sueur County, will ask voters whether the elections should be moved to the general elections held every other November.

Helena Township made the move to November elections several years ago.

Only one township has multiple candidates for office. Webster Township in Rice County has a challenger facing an incumbent supervisor and two candidates seeking to replace long-time clerk Arnie Pavek, who did not file for reelection.

Candidates for township offices are:

le sueur County:

Derrynane Township—Supervisor Jim Connelly chose not to file after 24 years on the board. John Tye has filed for a three-year term as supervisor, and is unopposed. Incumbent clerk Cindy Jirak has filed for reelection and is unopposed

Lanesburgh Township—Supervisor Tony Kubes and clerk Lila Korbel have filed for reelection and are unopposed.

Rice County:

Webster Township—Incumbent Supervisor Paul Linse will face opposition from Charles Rud. Clarence Walters and Todd Elwood have filed for the two-year term clerk position to succeed Pavek.

Wheatland Township—Supervisor Chuck Shimota and clerk Clarence Salaba have filed for reelection and are unopposed.

Scott County:

Belle Plaine Township—Incumbent Gary E. Schmitz is unopposed for another term as supervisor. Clerk Carol Bauer, who has been in office for 24 years, did not file for reelection. Jean McDermand has filed for a 2-year term as clerk.

Cedar Lake Township—Supervisor Norman Sticha and clerk Arnita Novotny are unopposed for reelection.

New Market Township— Incumbent Supervisor LeRoy Clausen and clerk Albert Zweber are unopposed for reelection.


Poll locations and times

The following are the polling places and times the polls will be open in the area. In each township, the annual town meeting will follow the election.

Derrynane: Polls are open from 5-8 p.m. at the Town Hall.

Lanesburgh: Polls are open from 3-8 p.m. at the Town Hall, 31498 State Hwy 13.

Webster: Polls are open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Webster Town Hall in Webster.

Wheatland: Polls are open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Town Hall in Veseli.

Cedar Lake: Polls are open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the St. Patrick Social Hall, 24425 Old Hwy. 13 Blvd.

Belle Plaine: Polls are open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Belle Plaine Town Hall, 25130 Hickory Blvd.

New Market: Polls are open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the New Market Area Hall.
