Trojan baseball wins 2 of 3 as season winds down

The New Prague Trojans won a pair of non-conference games last week as the regular season winds down.

The Trojans (9-7, 3-4 WCC East) were scheduled to face Orono in a doubleheader Tuesday and host Delano in a makeup game Wednesday. They conclude their regular season Friday, May 20, against Section 1AAAA for Owatonna.

The Section 1AAAA playoffs get underway Saturday, May 28. Pairings will be announced early next week.

Tigers 10, Trojans 0 New Prague managed just two hits in a 10-0, 5-inning loss to Hutchinson Thursday, May 12.

Nate Simon and Connor Pint were the only Trojans able to hit safely against the Tiger’s Jeremiah Van De Steeg, who took the win. New Prague did manage to get five walks. They loaded the bases with one out in the second, but Van De Steeg got the next two hitters on strikes.

Hutchinson scored in four of the five innings, including three runs in the fifth to end the game.

Connor Pint took the loss for the Trojans.

Trojans 3, Cardinals 2 On a chilly Friday evening, New Prague parlayed six hits into three runs to take a 3-2 win at Coon Rapids.

New Prague got the game’s first run in the third when Connor Pint was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Bridger Hahn and scored on a fielder’s choice by Alex Gregor.

The Cardinals tied it in the third, but New Prague went up 2-1 in the fourth. With one out, Nathan Berg was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a base hit by Frank Bartyzal and scored on a double by Pint.

The Trojans picked up an insurance run in the seventh when Sam Kjos singled and scored on a sacrifice by Hahn.

The insurance was needed as Coon Rapids scored on a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh, then put two more runners on base before the Trojans got the final out.

Adam Meyer pitched seven strong innings, allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out four. He also picked up two hits to lead the Trojans offensively.

Trojans 7, Cougars 2 Mankato East took a 2-0 lead, but the Trojans tied it in the second and scored five in the third on their way to a 7- 4 non-conference win Monday, May 16, at Memorial Stadium in New Prague.
