Trojan boys tie Wingers, lose to Stars

The Trojan hockey team had a tough go of it last week, as they tied Red Wing and lost to conference-leading Holy Angels.

The team was in third place in the Missota Conference with a 4-2-1 record, 9-6-1 overall, prior to their game at Farmington Tuesday.

New Prague will host Northfield at home on Friday, then play at Prior Lake Tuesday, Jan. 25, and at Shakopee Thursday, Jan. 27.

Trojans 3, Wingers 3

New Prague got the only goal of he first period when Ben Bartelt scored on a power play at 5:57, with Ryan Witty and Matt Ambroz getting assists.

Red Wing tied it in the second, and took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal early in the third period.

Ambroz got an unassisted goal at 6:01 of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Red Wing took a 3-2 lead, but Ambroz scored his second of the game at 14:20, with Brandon Denker and Corey Hrabe getting assists.

Neither team could score in overtime. New Prague killed a penalty that allowed the Wingers to get a pair of shots on goal, but those would be the only shots they could muster in the extra eight minutes. The Trojans had a flurry in the last 10 seconds, getting two or three shots, but couldn't put the puck in the net.

Red Wing outshot the Trojans 45-24. Dan Sacco stopped 42 of 45 shots.

Holy Angels, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, had little trouble in shutting out the Trojans 7-0 at New Prague Thursday.

The Stars scored three goals in the first, three more in the second and one in the third.

Sacco was kept busy in the nets, stopping 44 of 51 shots as the Stars outshot the Trojans 51-15.
