Trojan girls begin Section 1A play Friday

The New Prague Trojans will open the Section 1A girls hockey playoffs Friday, Feb. 11, at Albert Lea.

The Trojans (8-16-1, 2-9-1 Missota) received the No. 5 seed in the section and the Tigers (12-9-3) were No. 4. The two teams met earlier this season, with New Prague taking a 3-2 overtime win on November 18.

New Prague closed out the regular season by dropping a pair of Missota Conference games, losing to Shakopee 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday, Feb. 1, then falling to Red Wing 4-1 on Thursday, Feb. 3. The Trojans finished sixth of seven teams in the Missota, with Farmington winning the championship.

Sabers 2, Trojans 1

New Prague goaltender Shyler Sletta stopped 38 of 40 shots, but the Trojans couldn't get a consistent attack going and the Trojans lost 2-1 to the host Sabers.

The game was scoreless until 1:59 of the first period when Anna Kubes scored just five seconds into a power play for the Sabers. Brittany Sticha evened the score with a goal at 11:34, with an assist from Hallie Paschke.

The Sabers' Lauren Hespenheide scored the game-winner at 2:41 of the extra session.

Wingers 4, Trojans 1

Red Wing took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in a 50-second span of the first period. Sticha scored at 12:02 to keep the Trojans in the game, with assists from Paschke and Kendra Collier, but Red Wing answered with a goal at 13:34 to make it 3-1.

Red Wing added another goal in the second and controlled the pace of the game throughout the third to hold on for the 4-1 win.

Sletta stopped 28 of 32 shots for the Trojans, who were outshot 32-20 for the game.
