Trojan girls to face Austin Thursday in 1AAA hoops tourney

New Prague’s girls basketball team enters Thursday’s Section 1AAA playoffs on a roll.

The Trojans have won six straight games and came up with two impressive performances last week, defeating Prior Lake 65-60 and Shakopee 57-22 to finish their regular season with a 12-2 record, 18-6 overall. They finished second in the Missota Conference, behind unbeaten Holy Angels.

The Trojans were seeded No. 2 in the Section 1AAA playoffs, and will host No. 7 Austin on Thursday, March 2, at 7 p.m. If New Prague wins, they play at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester against the winner of No. 3 Albert Lea and No. 6 Winona.

Other quarterfinal games have No. 8 Lakeville South at No. 1 Waseca and No. 5 Northfield at No. 4 Red Wing.

Saturday’s winners will square off for the Section title Friday, March 10, at the Mayo Civic Center.

The Section 1AAA champion plays the Section 2AAA winner at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Williams Arena.

Trojans 65, Lakers 60

New Prague led by two at halftime and held on for a five-point win over Prior Lake in a Missota conference game Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The Trojans had a 30-28 advantage in the first half. Katelyn Meger, and Mandy Haecherl each hit a pair of three pointers for the Trojans with Meger netting 10 points at halftime.

Whitney Trecker was shut down in the first half, but came back in the second to score 13 points. Haecherl had 15 and Becky Theisen also had 13 for the Trojans. Camille Kratochvil added nine.

Trojans 57, Sabers 22

New Prague put on a defensive clinic against the Sabers, holding them to 12 points in the first half and just 10 in the second.

The Trojans outscored the Sabers 30-12 in the first half, and by nearly as much, 27-10, in the second.

Only one Shakopee player had double figures, Christian with 12 points. Only three others scored.

New Prague had a balanced attack, with nine different players scoring. Trecker had 18 points, nine in each half. The only other Trojan in double figures was Ashley Feneis, who came off the bench to score 10.
