Trojan girls to face Worthington; boys advance

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team punched its ticket to the state Class AAA tournament with a 63-38 win over Red Wing Friday evening at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Seeding for the tournament was done Sunday morning, and New Prague (25-4) received the No. 1 seed. They will face Worthington (24-2) at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Williams Arena. Other first round games have No. 4 Minneapolis North (18-7) facing Grand Rapids (20-8) at noon, No. 2 Totino Grace (26-3) facing Detroit Lakes (16-10) at 2 p.m. and No. 3 Minneahaha Academy (27-2) against St. Michael-Albertville (22-7) at 4 p.m.

Semifinals will be at noon and 2 p.m. Thursday and the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Senior forward Brit Rynda led the Trojans against Red Wing with 17 points, while the Trojan defense forced numerous turnovers and shut down Red Wing's offense for much of the game.

On Saturday the Trojan boys basketball team moved to within a game of the state tournament with a 49-40 win over Red Wing in the 1AAA semifinals. The Trojans were led by Dan Geiger with 17 points.

New Prague (20-8) , the top seed in the tournament, will play defending section champion St. Thomas Academy (18-9) in Friday's championship game. The game is a rematch of last year's section finals. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.
