Trojan girls fall to top-10 teams

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team dropped a pair of games last week to teams ranked in the state’s top 10 in Class AAAA.

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, The Trojans jumped to a 13-point lead against No. 9 Lakeville North before allowing the Panthers back into the game and losing in overtime. On Saturday, Dec. 10, New Prague put up a challenge, but lost to No. 1 Hopkins.

The Trojans (2-4) were scheduled to play at Bloomington Kennedy Tuesday, Dec. 13. On Friday, Dec. 16, they host Chaska. The Trojans will play Rochester Century at home Tuesday, Dec. 20, and play at Lakeville South Thursday, Dec. 22, for their final game before the holidays.

New Prague will take part in the Rochester Rotary Tournament December 29 and 30, with their first game against Anoka on Thursday, Dec. 29.

Panthers 67, Trojans 58 After Lakeville North scored a pair of free throws to start the game, the Trojans went on a 15-0 run to open up a 13-point lead and controlled the action for much of the first half, leading by as many as 14. However, the Panthers went on a late run and cut the lead to three points, 35-32 at the half.

Lakeville North took the lead early in the second half, but the Trojans fought back and reclaimed the lead down the stretch. They had a chance to wrap up the game, but missed several free throws down the stretch, including a pair with three seconds left in regulation. That sent the game into overtime.

The Panthers quickly took charge in the extra session and outscored the Trojans 13-4 for the nine-point win, 67-58.

Maizie Deihl led the Trojans with 18 points, with Taylor Hustad adding 17. Also scoring were Randi Allar, Emily Russo and Sally Traxler with six each, Keegan Mulvihill with four and McKenzie Holgate with one.
