Trojan girls looking to contend for conference, section titles

New Prague High School’s girls track team has its sights set on another successful season as it prepares for the 2006 season.

Coach Johnny Josephson’s 2005 team won the True Team section meet, taking fourth at the state meet. The team also finished fourth in the Section 2AA meet last year and sent three athletes to the state meet.

Two of those athletes, Katie Theisen and Kristin Busch, graduated, as did Sara Gerold, who was a strong presence in the throws. Both Theisen and Gerold were among the top triple jumpers in the state last season, so the Trojans will have large shoes to fill in that event.

Becky Theisen, a junior, the other state entrant last season, is back. She ran in the 200 meters at last year’s state meet, after running in the 100 meters a year earlier. Other top athletes returning are seniors Katelyn Meger, Annie Connelly, Jenny Hendricks, Whitney Trecker, Hannah Zelmer, Emily J. Bisek, Danielle Busch, Melanie Deutsch, Shelbie Johnson, Amanda Wagner and Erin Hammes.

Other returning letter winners include Veronica Kneeland, Kelsey Kalina, Aimee Lauterbach, Rochelle Warner, Emily R. Bisek, Erin Sand, Jill Bartusek, Tracy Stepka, Alexis Sherman, Kit Cross and Kevynn Prochaska.

Several new faces on the squad who will contribute include Rena Kneeland, Lennea Fitterer, Marissa Schoenecker and Britt Rynda.

Josephson says one of the strengths of this year’s team is speed, a good commodity to have in track and field.

We are faster in the sprints all the way to the distance events than we have been in a long time
