Trojan girls regain winning form at Northfield

After dropping two straight Missota Conference contests, to Holy Angels and Farmington, the Trojan girls hockey team regained their winning ways with a 7-2 win over Northfield Thursday.

The Trojans, 8-4 in the conference, 19-5 overall, are scheduled to close out their regular season this week with two home games. On Tuesday, Jan. 25, they were to host Prior Lake. On Thursday, Jan. 27, New Prague will host Shakopee in a Senior Night game. That game will start at 7 p.m. The Section 1A playoffs will begin Tuesday, Feb. 1. The Trojans should get the top seed and a first-round bye, which means they would host a quarterfinal game on Thursday, Feb. 3. The semifinals and championship will be played at Lund Arena at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter February 8 and 10.

Tigers 4, Trojans 3

In December, the Trojans held a 3-0 lead over Farmington in the third period, only to lose 4-3 in overtime. For a time in their January 18 contest, it appeared the reverse could happen.

Farmington scored two goals in the second and a third just 34 seconds into the third to take a 3-0 lead, but then saw that lead disappear over the next eight minutes. Jenna Kilpatrick scored first for the Trojans, at 1:08, with Jessie Doig getting an assist. Doig and Kacy Ambroz set up Kilpatrick for another goal at 7:45, and 44 seconds later, Doig scored, from Breanne Hrabe and Kilpatrick, at 8:29, tieing the game.

But Farmington scored a goal at 11:33 of the third period to take a 4-3 lead. The Trojans put tremendous pressure on the Tigers' goaltender, and had several good scoring chances in the final 30 seconds, but the Tigers held on for the 4-3 win.

Farmington outshot the Trojans 29-24. Daedra Culshaw stopped 25 shots for New Prague.
