Trojan girls run fifth in tough field

New Prague High School's boys and girls cross country teams opened their seasons Friday, Aug. 31, at the Dakota County Invitational at Eagan High School.

The girls team had a solid performance, placing fifth of 10 teams in a strong field, while the boys, missing two of their top runners, finished ninth of 10 teams.

The Trojan harriers will travel south to Montgomery on Thursday, Sept. 6, for the Redbird Invitational. The first race starts at 4:15 p.m. The teams will compete at the Hutchinson Invitational at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.

Girls Race

New Prague faced a strong field, including two teams that competed at last year's state Class AA cross country meet, and the Trojans held their own, finishing fifth of 10 teams.

Junior Amanda Wagner and eighth grader Anna Rynda led the Trojans, with Wagner placing 17th in a time of 13 minutes, 25 seconds, and Rynda just a second behind in 20th place.

The Trojans did a good job of pack running. After the first mile, only 23 seconds separated the entire seven-person varsity.

Jenny Hendricks was the third Trojan to cross the finish line in 13:26, good for 24th place. Molly Tikalsky, running her first varsity race, was 36th in 13:58. Rounding out the field for the Trojans were Kelsey Wiebusch (38th, 14:10), Abbey Wymer (42nd, 14:20) and Charlie Herrmann (47th, 14:35).

Eastview won the meet, scoring 60 points, while Eagan was second with 72 and Lakeville South, third with 73. Apple Valley was fourth (87), followed by New Prague (135), Hastings (139), Forest Lake (191), Farmington (203), Northfield (207) and Hill-Murray (247).

New Prague was second in the girls JV Race. Eagan won with 31, while New Prague had 76. Jacelyn Peabody was fifth, and Annie Dittberner was sixth for the Trojans.

Our goal was to be in the top three as a varsity
