Trojan girls third at Farmington tourney

The New Prague Trojans placed third at the Farmington Invitational girls hockey tournament last week, splitting a pair of games to former Missota Conference rivals last week. The Trojans lost to Red Wing 3-2, then defeated Holy Angels 5-1.

As reported in last week's issue of The Times, New Prague opened the tournament with a win over Hudson, WI.

New Prague (8-6-1, 2-1 Wright County Conference) is ranked No. 7 in Class A and was scheduled to face Mound Westonka (No. 8, Class A) on Tuesday, Jan. 5. They will take on Eden Prairie (No. 5, Class AA) on Thursday, Jan. 7, then host Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8. They return to action against Holy Family/Waconia at Victoria on Thursday, Jan. 14. New Prague will be without their leading scorer, sophomore Catie Skaja, for all four games. She is competing with Team USA at the IIHF Women's U18 Tournament in St. Catharine's, Ontario, Canada.

Wingers 3, Trojans 2 An earlier meeting between New Prague and Red Wing resulted in a tie, and this one was almost as close. The Trojans spotted Red Wing a 2-0 lead and battled back, but came up a goal short in a 3-2 loss Tuesday, Dec. 29.

The Wingers' Taylor Heise, a teammate of Skaja's on Team USA, scored a pair of goals in the fist period for a 2-0 lead. Skaja scored on an assist from Jordan Anderson with just 16 seconds remaining in the period and the Trojans trailed 2-1 at the first intermission.
