Trojan girls track team tops 5-team field at Faribault

The New Prague High School girls track team began their outdoor season April 5 with a five-school meet in Faribault. The girls had a strong showing, taking first place and placing at least one athlete in the top three in all but two events.

New Prague had 146 points. Dover-Eyota/St. Charles was second with 104, followed by Faribault (91), St. Paul Arlington (18) and Southwest Christian (6).

The Trojans have been traditionally strong in the field events, and Tuesday’s meet showed this year’s squad should be no exception. First place finishes went to Becky Theisen in discus with a throw of 116 feet, Kristin Busch in the triple jump with a distance of 35-1 and Jenny Hendricks in high jump with a jump of 4-8.

Theisen also finished second in the long jump, and Busch was third in the shot put.

Other place winners in field events included Kimby Kukacka, fifth in the long jump; Sara Gerold, second in the shot put and third in discus, Katie Theisen, second in the triple jump, Whitney Trecker, third in the high jump and Erin Hammes, fourth in pole vault.

The Trojan girls excelled on the track as well. First place finishes went to Becky Theisen (100-meters), Busch (400m). Katie Theisen (300 hurdles), Trecker (200m), the 4 x 400m relay (Emily Bisek, Becky Theisen, Busch and Shelbie Johnson) and the 4 x 200m. relay (Erin Sand, Hammes, Trecker and Bisek).

Taking second were the 4x800m. relay (Annie Connelly, Katelyn Meger, Kelsey Kalina and Hendricks) and the 4x100m. relay team (Jill Bartusek, Hammes, Kukacka and Sand). Other second place finishes went to Johnson (100 hurdles) and Bisek (100m)

Hendricks grabbed third in the 1,600, with Meger finishing fifth. Also tallying points for the Trojans were Amanda Wagner (third) and Rochelle Warner (sixth) in the 800m., and Erin Sand, sixth in the 200m.

All in all, it was a great team effort for the Trojans. Trojans had strong upper class leadership as well as new young talent. Coach Josephson looks for the girls’ team to have another great season and with the first meet under their belts, things look promising.
