Trojan girls win 2A hockey title
The New Prague Trojan girls hockey team punched its ticket to the Xcel Energy Center and the State Class A Girls Hockey Tournament with a 5-1 win over Mound Westonka Thursday, Feb. 11, at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
The Trojans pounced on the Whitehawks goaltender with 11 first period shots and led 3-1 at the first intermission. Jordan Anderson scored the Trojans’ first goal, and Catie Skaja had the other two, both on the power play.
Skaja added power play goals in both the second and third period to put the game away for New Prague.
Sydney Culshaw didn’t have to make many stops - New Prague outshot the Whitehawks by a 27-10 margin, but she made several spectacular saves to keep the Whitehawks at bay.
New Prague will play in its fifth state tournament - its first since 2008. Quarterfinals will be at the Xcel Energy Center on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The Trojans have a 17-9-1 record and have won seven straight games. Seeding for the state tournament will be done on Saturday, Feb. 13.
