Trojan girls win Missota gym title

New Prague High School's gymnastics team regained the Missota Conference championship Friday, winning the conference meet by 0.65 points over second-place Northfield.

The two teams split last year, with Northfield winning the conference meet and the championship. This year it was the Trojan's turn.

Northfield's Hannah Dvorak was the medalist for the meet, with an all-around score of 37.75. But the Trojans' depth and balance among events contributed to higher scores in three of the four events.

Even the beam, which had been the Trojans trouble spot all season, was good to them. New Prague scored 35 points on the beam, with the Trojans taking two of the top four spots.

The field was one of the strongest in recent memory, with all five teams topping 130 points.

New Prague scored 143.4 points, while the Raiders had 142.75. Prior Lake came in third with 139.076, followed by Red Wing (134.225) and Farmington (131.075).

Brittany Ellanson was the only Trojan to bring home a gold medal. The senior scored a 9.45 on the floor exercise. She also was fourth on the balance beam.

Alysha Gareis was second on the vault with a 9.4. The Trojans had three third-place finishes, Shelbie Johnson on the vault (9.2), Brooke Ellanson on the bars (9.25), and Jess Hoffman on the beam (9.3). Brittany Ellanson was fourth on the beam with a 9.05.

Brittany Ellanson was fourth in the all-around, with a 35.725, while Johnson was fifth with a 34.8.

The Trojans also got good scores from Brittany Ellanson and Danielle Busch on the vault, Gareis, Johnson and Wagner on the bars, Laura Busch on the beam and Ashley Morris, Tracy Westenberg and Johnson on the floor.

Trojan coach Matt Shetka said both New Prague and Northfield had struggled with injuries lately. Neither one of us felt like we had a great meet
