Trojan golfers look strong in early-season competition

The New Prague Trojan boys golf team had an impressive week, winning two eight-team meets in a four-day span

On Friday, the Trojans finished atop the field in the eight-team New Prague Invitational, defeating Lakeville by two strokes. Just four days earlier, the Panthers had beaten the Trojans in a three-team meet. On Monday, the team traveled to Stonebrooke Golf Club for the Missota Early Bird, a meet featuring all eight Missota Conference teams, and they tied for first with Prior Lake.

New Prague’s Jason Hatch, a junior, led the team with a one-over par 72. Hatch bogeyed the third, 12th and 13th holes at CreeksBend, but then got birdies on the 14th and 18th, winning the meet by one stroke over Kranz of Lakeville.

Eighth grader Stephen Gross was fourth in the meet with a 76.

Other Trojan scores were eighth grader Tyler Starkey with a 78, freshman Taylor Ruehling with a 79, freshman Nick Mahowald with an 82 and senior David Haeg with an 83.

The Trojans had a four-person score of 305, with Lakeville second at 307. Other teams were Albert Lea (317), Waconia (321), Orono (322), Austin (324), Bloomington Jefferson (324) and Redwood Valley (325).

I was very pleased with the consistent team play
