Trojan gymnasts heading to state!

The New Prague Trojan gymnastics team qualified for its 10th state tournament in 11 years Friday, winning the Section 2A championship in Waseca.

New Prague scored 143.625 points, nearly nine points higher than second-place Blue Earth.

In addition to qualifying for the team meet, the Trojans will have 11 entries in the state individual meet. Jess Hoffman led the way with three entries, in the all-around, uneven bars and floor exercise. Qualifying in two events were Ashley Morris (floor and balance beam), Laura Busch (beam and vault) and Alysha Gareis (bars and vault). Other Trojan state entrants are Steph Mach on the bars and Brooke Ellanson on the beam.

Ellanson and Gareis took the only golds for the Trojans, Ellanson recovered after a bad spill on the bars to win the beam with a 9.325 and Gareis won the bars with a 9.35.

The state gymnastics tournament will be held Thursday and Friday, Feb. 26 and 27, at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion. Both the dates and location are changes from past years. Team competition will be on Thursday and Individual and all-around on Friday. Class A competition begins at 11 a.m . both days.
