Trojan runners do well at Hutchinson

New Prague's girls and boys cross country teams traveled to Hutchinson last week, and both did well.

The meet included many of the same teams the Trojans will see at the Section 2AA meet. The girls team had a great showing, finishing fourth, and placing ahead of last year's 2AA state entrant Willmar.

A strong finish by fifth runner Annie Connelly helped the team score. Eighth graders Jenny Hendricks and Amanda Wagner moved up to the varsity race. Junior Ellie Stasney led the Trojans.

Senior Brad Schmitz led the boys varsity. The team competition included three Section 2AA teams ranked in the top ten; Marshall, Mankato West and Willmar. The Trojans moved up one place from last year, finishing in 10th place. Eighth graders Drew Revak and Preston Tomlinson moved up to the varsity and scored well.

Girls team results had Marshall winning with 58 points, followed by Sartell with 88, Waseca 97 and New Prague 128. Willmar was fifth at 141, followed by Fairmont 143, Mankato West 187, Buffalo 191, Mankato East 195, Shakopee 202, Hutchinson 212 and Dassel-Cokato inc.

The Trojans did a good job of pack running as their top five finishers all were within 22 seconds of each other, and all finished within a minute's time.

Ellie Stasney was 17th in 16 minutes, 14 seconds. Megan Wagner was 23rd at 16:21. Katelyn Meger was 26th (16:27), Hendricks was 29th (16:36), Connelly 33rd (16:49) and Amanda Wagner 37th (17:03).

In the JV race, Veronica Kneeland finished 14th in 18:29 to lead New Prague.

In the middle school race, Natalie Rutt was 14th, in 14:48. Allie Becker was 17th in 14:51.

In the boys race, Marshall had 29 points to claim first, followed by Willmar (44), Mankato West (70), Buffalo (127), Shakopee (176), Sartell (182), Waseca (183), Hutchinson (188), Fairmont (217), New Prague (276), Dassel-Cokato (321) and Mankato East inc.

Schmitz led the Trojan boys with a 44th place finish in 18:46. Next was Revack (53rd, 19:00), Todd Reed (19:08, 55th), Tomlinson (58th, 19:16), Matt Perkinson (61st, 19:33), Steven Solheid (67th, 20:15) and Justin Turek (72nd, 20:40).

In the JV race, Nick Mahowald led the Trojans, placing 44th in 21:00. Matt Revak was next, finishing 49th in 21:14.

Marty Herrmann led the middle school boys, with a 20th place finish, in 12:48.

The team will race at Prior Lake on Thursday, Sept. 23. On September 30, they will compete at Montgomery-Lonsdale.
