Trojan runners have high hopes in Section 2AA meet

The New Prague Trojans boys and girls cross country teams have high hopes as they enter the Section 2AA cross country meets Thursday at the Chaska Town Course.

The Trojan girls are expected to finish in the top four of the section, and feel they have a legitimate shot at getting a two-two finish, which would put them in the State Cross Country meet for the first time in school history.

The boys, meanwhile, have showed marked improvement this season and hope to finish in the top half of the section.

Chaska is the favorite in the girls race, with the Trojans, Mound Westonka and Shakopee all hoping to challenge the Hawks for the section title. Hutchinson, Marshall, Buffalo and Willmar also have strong teams, according to coach Julie Berg. In addition to the top two teams, the top 10 runners also advance to the state meet.

New Prague's strength comes from its depth. The Trojans' have three runners that could qualify individually if they have strong performances - Anna Rynda, Amanda Wagner and Jenny Hendricks. But it'll come down to the fourth and fifth runners' showings that will determine the team outcome, and that's where the Trojans hope to shine.

The meet will be held on the Chaska Par 30 Town Course Thursday, Oct 25. Girls start at 3:30 p.m. and Boys at 4:15 p.m. Due to construction, spectators are advised to park at the Chaska Target at Pioneer and Hwy 41 and walk north on Hundertmark Rd. to the course.

The Trojans competed at the Shakopee Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 16, but did not send their top seven runners, who instead went for a workout at the Chaska course.

The Trojans sent a team of five runners who normally run JV. Annie Dittberner, a seventh-grader, was the top finisher in 17 minutes, 22.8 seconds. Molly Tikalsky finished in 17:54.6, Hallie Tietz in 18:02.8, Danielle Tikalsky in 18:02.9 and Natalie Rutt in 18:15.0.

Anna Zeimet was the top Trojan in the JV race, finishing 28th in 18:23.5.

Prior Lake won the meet with 29 points, followed by Mound Westonka (72), Eden Prairie (88), Edina (147), Monticello (160), Shakopee (170), Rosemount (175), Hutchinson (204), Chaska (224), Farmington (254), Waconia (337), Bloomington Jefferson (354), Glencoe-Silver Lake (397), Northfield (398), Red Wing (404), New Prague (416) and Jordan (423).
