Trojan, Saber girls skate to 3-3 draw

The New Prague Trojans and Shakopee Sabers had a backand- forth game that saw the lead change hands three times, with the two sides settling for a 3-3 overtime tie Thursday, Jan. 3, at Shakopee. T

he Trojans got on the board first on a goal by Kasey Marquardt, assisted by Dani Kocina and Mikaela Algren.

But the Sabers took control in the second period, as Sarah Kubes and Lauren Hespenheide scored unassisted goals to take a 2-1 lead.

The Trojans scored twice in a 62-second span in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Lindsay Paschke scored on a power play, unassisted, to tie the game and Kocina put her team on top at 6:23, assisted by Marissa Kivi.

The Trojans tried to hang on, but the Sabers’ Hespenheide scored with 1:33 left in regulation to force an overtime. Neither team could score in the extra session.

New Prague outshot the Sabers 40-19. Sophie Puente had 16 saves for the Trojans.

New Prague (13-4-1, 2-1-1 Missota) is ranked No. 6 in Class A. They were scheduled to host Holy Angels Tuesday, Jan. 8, in what is a non-conference game. The Stars are not eligible for the Missota Conference title due to their cooperative sponsorship with Richfield this season, although they are playing a Missota schedule. New Prague plays at Hutchinson in a non-conference contest Friday, Jan. 11, then will travel to No. 2 Red Wing on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
