Trojan tennis team drops opener
The New Prague Trojan fall sports season got underway Tuesday, as the Chaska Hawks served up a 5-2 win over New Prague in the Trojans’ opener.
Doubles were strong for New Prague, as two veteran teams scored the only points for the Trojans.
New Prague’s No. 1 doubles team of Teresa Higgins and Tanya Halloran won a convincing 6-0, 6-1 match over Robyn Henderson and Amy Gosewich, while the No. 2 team of Sara Kelly and Allie Mahowald had to go to three sets to defeat Meena and Shruthi Dahyal, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
The Trojans’ other doubles team of Ali Feneis and Allison Stupica went to three sets in losing to Brittainy Geyssler and Ali Henderson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Chaska swept the singles competition. At No. 1 singles, Megan Kubes lost to Chaska’s Sammy Sarkis, 6-0, 6-0. Anna Witty lost at No. 2 singles to Tori Buelow, 6-0, 6-3. Kelsey Stupica lost at No. 3 singles to Gabi Friends 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, while No. 4 singles player Meredith Goulson lost to Emiliya Khazan 6-2, 6-2.
New Prague will travel to Glencoe-Silver Lake Thursday for a four-team meet, beginning at 10 a.m.
The New Prague Invitational will be Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. The tournament will include eight teams from throughout the state. Scheduled to compete are Faribault, Maple River, Thief River Falls, Roseau, United South Central, Minnetonka and Glencoe-Silver Lake.
New Prague has meets at Jordan Monday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m. and at Mound-Westonka Wednesday, Aug 31, at 3 p.m.
