Trojan tennis team gets first win

New Prague High School’s boys tennis team picked up their first win of the season during Saturday’s New Prague Invitational.

The Trojans defeated Shakopee 4-3. Also on Saturday, the Trojans lost to Spring Lake Park 6-1 and Faribault 4-3. Earlier in the week, the team lost to Holy Angels, 7-0

The Trojans have four matches in four days next week. They travel to Mankato West on Monday, May 1, and Shakopee Tuesday, May 2. They face Farmington Wednesday, May 3, and Prior Lake Thursday, May 4, both at home. The Farmington match is rescheduled from April 20. That match was postponed due to rain.

Stars 7, Trojans 0

The Stars had little trouble with the Trojans. New Prague took only one game in eight sets in singles competition, and were swept in two sets in each of the doubles matches as well.

Patrick Jeffrey and Matt Gillen, at No. 2 doubles, had the best showing, losing 6-4, 6-3.

Also losing in doubles were the team of No. 1 team of Andy Kubes and Marty DeValk and the No. 3 team of David McCollister and Sam Dresow.

In singles, Dan Coons, John Cilibrasi, Josh Meuwissen and Ben Dresow lost their matches.

Panthers 6, Trojans 1

The doubles team of McCollister and Sam Dresow provided the only win for New Prague in the first round of the New Prague Invitational Saturday.

Losing in singles were Coons, Cilibrasi, Ben Dresow and Meuwissen. In doubles, the Kubes/DeValk team and the Jeffrey /Gillen team all lost their matches.

Trojans 4, Sabers 3

Doubles was the key in the Trojans’ 4-3 win over Shakopee. The Trojans swept all three matches, with Kubes/DeValk winning 6-3, 6-4; the Jeffrey/Gillen team winning 5-6, 6-1, 1-2, and the team of Drew Geyen and Drew Smisek won 6-2, 6-3.

Ben Dresow provided the Trojans with the one point they needed in singles, winning at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-1.

Coons, Cilibrasi and Meuwissen lost their singles matches.

Trojans 4, Falcons 3

The Trojans and Falcons had met earlier in the season, and the results of this match were the same, with Faribault taking a 4-3 win.

New Prague got wins from Ben Dresow at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, and from the Jeffrey/Gillen team, 6-1, 6-2, and the McCollister/Sam Dresow team, 6-4, 7-5/

Coons, Cilibrasi and Meuwissen lost in singles, while Kubes/DeValk lost in doubles.
