Trojan volleyball team loses to Faribault

New Prague High School's volleyball team lost a four-game match to Faribault last week, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Scores were 25-23, 26-24, 25-20, 27-25. The Trojans were scheduled to host Mankato West Tuesday, then will open their Missota Conference schedule Thursday at Shakopee. The Sabers are rated No. 2 in the State Class AAA coaches poll.

New Prague travels to Mankato Saturday for the West Invitational, then will play at Holy Angels Thursday, Sept. 13.

In game one, the Falcons took an early lead, but rallied to take an 11-10 lead. The Falcons regained the lead at 13-11 and eventually led 22-19, but the Trojans again came back to take a 23-22 lead. However, the Falcons scored the final three points of the game to take the win.

New Prague controlled game two, at one time leading 20-12, but the Falcons fought back and took a 24-23 lead. New Prague, however, got the last three points to tie the match at one game each.

Faribault led the entire way in game three, opening up a 14-6 lead at one point. The Trojans scrambled and pulled back to within four points at 22-18, but the Falcons took control and won 25-20.

Game four saw New Prague take a big lead, only to see the Falcons whittle away and finally take it at the end. The Trojans led at one point 21-9. Faribault took its first lead at 24-23 and eventually prevailed 27-25.

The Trojans were led by Dani Jilek, who had 16 kills. Lindsay Rybak had eight and Hannah Strop seven. Maggie Weiers has six kills from her off-hand position.

Sammie Hertaus had 23 set assists, and Anissa Svoboda had 14. Hertaus also had eight service aces, while Sam Wooten had two.

Wooten had 25 defensive digs, while Rybak had 13 digs and six block assists.

We knew Faribault would keep us on our toes on defense
