Trojan win at Delano proves costly

The New Prague Trojans girls basketball team earned a 73-59 win over Delano Friday, Jan. 15, but it proved to be a costly win.

Trojan junior Maizie Deihl suffered a knee injury late in the contest. Coach Ron Gunderson said it was a tear of the ACL (anterior collateral ligament) and she would be out for the remainder of the season.

Deihl, a four-year starter, is averaging 19.1 points per game for the Trojans, after averaging 16.7 points during her sophomore season.

Her’s is the second knee injury since the holidays, as reserve center Sally Traxler has also been out of the lineup for the last few weeks.

“In my 40 years coaching, we’ve only had five of these, and two of them have come within the last few weeks,” he said.

Gunderson said others on the team will have to pick up the slack.

“We’ve got some outstanding young talent on this team, and our intent all along was to get these young kids more playing time as the season went on,” he said.

Also last week, the Trojans lost an overtime contest to a strong Hutchinson team (No. 3, Class AAA).
