Trojans fall to Central

Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is credited with the saying That which does not kill you makes you stronger.

New Prague girls basketball coach Ron Gunderson apparently subscribed to this philosophy when setting up his schedule for the 2008-09 season. The Trojans have put together one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the state six teams ranked in the pre-season polls.

The Trojans took their 6-0 record to St. Paul Central Friday, Dec. 1. The two-time defending Class AAAA champions were ranked No. 3 in Class AAAA. New Prague overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to tie the game at 54-54 before dropping a 56-54 decision to the Minutemen.

Earlier in the week the Trojans defeated Simley 66-40.

New Prague (6-1) was scheduled to host Eastview, ranked No. 9 in Class AAAA, on Tuesday, Dec. 23. They will be off for the holidays before traveling to Jordan on Tuesday, Jan. 6, then face Hopkins, No. 2 in Class AAAA, Jan. 8.

Trojans 66, Spartans 40

New Prague doubled up on Simley in the first half of a girl-boy doubleheader Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Simley, taking a 38-19 lead. Junior Maggie Weiers was an inside force for New Prague, scoring 13 points and senior guard Amanda Wagner had eight. The Trojans maintained their lead in the second half and emptied their bench in taking the 66-40 win.

Weiers finished with a game-high 19 points. Maggie Seter scored six points off the bench for the Trojans. New Prague held Simley's leading scorer Natalie Walseth to eight points, 11 under her season average.
