Trojans fall to East in boys tennis

The New Prague Trojan boys tennis team is preparing for the Section 2AA singles and doubles tournament, which will begin Saturday, May 24, at the Matchpoint Tennis Center in Lakeville.

The Trojan boys were eliminated from team competition in their first round match Tuesday, May 13, at Mankato East.

The Cougars scored a 5-2 win over the Trojans on the strenghth of their singles play. Marty DeValk, Brett Hoffman, Travis Oestreich and Jared Burton all lost in singles play. The doubles team of Josh Meuiwissen and Ben Dresow also went down to defeat.

New Prague did score two doubles wins. Mitch Fratzke and Andrew Puente took a win at No 2 doubles by a 6-0, 6-2 score, while Jamie Kollasch and Mario Najera closed out their match with a second-set tie-breaker, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).

Willmar won its first round match against New Ulm in the other southern division first round match. In the northern division, Orono, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka won their opening match.

In the quarterfinal round Thursday, May 15, Mankato West defeated Mankato East 5-2, Willmar beat Hutchinson 4-3, Wayzata defeated Orono 5-2 and Eden Prairie beat Minnetonka 5-2

Semifinals and finals were scheduled for Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
