Trojans gain experience during tennis season

The New Prague High School boys tennis team gained valuable experience for the future with seven freshmen joining the varsity line-up. this season. The team finished the regular season with a record of 2-15.

On Thursday, May 24, two singles players, Marty DeValk and Marcus Pleiss, and two doubles teams, Ben Dresow/Josh Meuwissen and Mitch Fratzke/Andrew Puente, competed in the Section 2AA singles and doubles tournament. Of the four Trojan entries, the team of Dresow and Meuwissen were the only ones to get past the first round.

The duo, both juniors, defeated Matt Starcking and Evan Nolander of Albert Lea in their opening match, 6-1, 7-5. They lost their second-round match to Casey Whalen and John Rasmussen of Hutchinson 6-1, 7-5.

Losing in the first round were Fratzke and Puente, to Jesse and Justin Wiggins of New Ulm, 6-1, 6-2. In singles, DeValk lost to Pat Trembly of Mankato West 6-0, 6-0 and Pleiss lost 6-0, 6-0 to Chase Miller of Hutchinson.

Coach Matt Duoos said during the season the young Trojans showed a lot of enthusiasm. They came to each practice and match ready to work hard and learn the fundamentals of the game
