Trojans get big section win vs. StormHawks

The New Prague Trojan girls hockey team split a pair of games last week, defeating Chaska/Chanhassen 3-1 and losing to New Ulm (No. 12, Class A) 6-3.

The Trojans (7-9-1, 2-2-1 Wright County Conference) were scheduled to face Delano/ Rockford (No. 11, Class A) on Tuesday, Jan. 9. The Trojans host Mound Westonka Friday, Jan. 12, and will play at Holy Family/Waconia Tuesday, Jan. 16, in a game that will be a factor in seeding Section 2AA in February.

Trojans 3, StormHawks 1 New Prague picked up an important win against a Section 2AA opponent, defeating Chaska/Chanhassen 3-1.

The StormHawks scored the game’s first goal at 10:01 of the first period, and it stayed that way until the third period, when the Trojans got things going.

Lexi Kocina scored two goals less than 90 seconds apart to put New Prague up 2-1. The first, on a power play, came at 2:59 of the third, with Kaitlyn Blair and Catie Skaja getting assists. The second came at 4:24, with Skaja and Kailey Anderson assisting.

New Prague picked up a late goal, by Blair at 16:33, with Skaja getting an assist. It was an evenly-played contest, with both teams managing 30 shots on goal. Mariah Marek had a strong performance, stopping 29 shots to pick up the win in net.

Eagles 6, Trojans 3 New Prague faced a very good New Ulm team at the New Ulm Civic Arena Saturday, Jan. 6, and lost to the Eagles 6-3.

The game was closer than the score indicated. New Prague trailed by just one goal before the Eagles scored twice in the final two minutes to ice the game.
