Trojans hold on for 1-point win in opener
In their season opener, the New Prague Trojans showed some offensive firepower in the first half, then overcame mistakes in the second half to take a 21-20 win over visiting St. Michael-Albertville (STMA) Friday, Sept. 2.
The Trojans got two touchdowns from junior Tony Kubes and one from junior Darin Geyen as they staked themselves to a 21-7 halftime lead. The team continued to move the ball in the second half, but a couple of big turnovers by the Trojans and big plays by the Knights kept STMA in the game. A missed 2-point conversion attempt with 2:30 remaining in the game was the difference as New Prague was able to ride out the final minutes and protect the lead.
Coach Tony Buthe said his team won because of its stellar play in the first half.
