Trojans locked in; claim state clay target crown

The New Prague Trojan Clay Target team capped off an outstanding week of shooting by claiming the Minnesota State High School League championship Saturday, June 25, at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.

The team of Woodrow Glazer, Jordan Stocker, Isaac Simon, Parker Precht and Ben Dietz hit 480 of 500 targets during two rounds of shooting at the tournament. Alternates to the team were Kortney Novak and Tyler Bisek.

Dietz shot a team-high 99 targets out of 100 to lead the team. Woodrow Glazer was next with 97, followed by Jordan Stocker (96), and Isaac Simon and Parker Precht (both with 94).

In the first session, New Prague had 237 of 250 targets and was tied for third. They hit 243 of 250 in their second session.

Each session was split into four rotations, with New Prague competing in the second rotation, at the same station as Edina, Pillager and Red Lake County Central. There are five spots at each station, with shooters alternating, each firing five shots and then moving to the next spot. After each shooter fires 25 shells, they take a short break, then repeat.

After qualifying for the state tournament by winning the Class 8A meet with a phenomenal score of 491 on Tuesday, June 21, the team took a day off and then returned to practice on Thursday and Friday.

“They came ready to prove they could crush clays, and that they did,” Coach Paul Dietz said. He was happy with their first round results, but during the break, he challenged his team, asking them to each break one more than they did in the first round.

“Their performance dominated the second half and catapulted the team into the lead. They would win by nine targets,” Dietz said.

The team knew their score was good. The question was...
