Trojans lose opener to Owatonna

The New Prague Trojan volleyball team opened its 2008 campaign with an unexpected home match Tuesday, losing to Owatonna in three games, 27-25, 25-16, 25-23.

The match had been scheduled to be played in Owatonna, but was moved with short notice to New Prague because construction work on the Owatonna gym was not complete.

The Trojans overcame an eight-point deficit late in game one to tie the match at 24, then the teams traded the lead before the Huskies prevailed, 27-25. Owatonna controlled game 2, thanks to some Trojan miscues, but New Prague recovered in game 3, holding an early lead before the Huskies regrouped and took the win.

New Prague had trouble stopping Owatonna's Jordan Spatenka, who had 19 kills. The Trojans did a good job blocking, though, using their height advantage to stop a number of Owatonna attacks.

Maggie Weiers and Brit Rynda led the Trojans, with eight and seven kills respectively. Rynda added eight digs and three blocks. Weiers was 14 of 15 serving and Anissa Svoboda was 15 of 16 serving with two aces and had 10 assists while running the Trojan offense.

This was a good opening match for us
