Trojans top Scarlets, Bluejays

New Prague's boys basketball team opened its season last week with a pair of home games, topping Mankato West and Waseca. The Trojans are ranked No. 10 in the State Class AAA basketball poll.

New Prague will face three Big 9 Conference teams in the next week. They travel to Rochester Mayo Thursday and host Owatonna Saturday, Dec. 19. New Prague's final game before Christmas will be at Faribault on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Trojans 63, Scarlets 58

New Prague opened its new season against the same team that ended its last one Thursday, Dec. 10. But this time it was New Prague prevailing with a 63-58 win over Mankato West at New Prague.

It was a close game that saw 15 lead changes and was tied nine times. The last time was when the Scarlets hit a free throw to make it 52-52 with about 3 minutes left.

That's when New Prague's Nick Gerdes hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Trojans the lead for good. Danny Geiger followed with a short jumper to give New Prague a five-point lead. They would lead by 63-58, their biggest lead of the night, when Cale Girten hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left. West hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the final 63-58.

Geiger, the only returning starter for the Trojans, led the way with 30 points. Girten added 14, Joe Hatch 7, Gerdes 6, Jake Meyer 4 and Alex Dittberner 2. In addition to his 30 points, Geiger had a team-high five assists, while Dittberner added four. Geiger had six rebounds while Girten had five.
