Trojans win finale at Austin Tourney

New Prague High School's girls hockey team salvaged a win in the final game of the Austin Tournament last week.

New Prague lost its opener to Albert Lea, 3-2, then lost 1-0 to Simley before defeating Willmar in the seventh place game of the tournament. New Prague's Brooke Bartelt was named to the all-tournament team.

The Trojans have a 4-10-1 record with 10 games remaining on the schedule, all Missota Conference games. They were scheduled to host Shakopee Tuesday, Jan. 6. On Friday, Jan. 9, they play at Holy Angels, and on Tuesday, Jan. 13, New Prague will host Hutchinson.

Tigers 3, Trojans 2

New Prague gave up two first period goals and couldn't make up the difference in their 2-1 opening round loss to Albert Lea Monday, Dec. 29, in the first round of the Austin Tournament.

The Trojans peppered the Tiger net with shots, but weren't able to put one in the net until 35 seconds remained in regulation. Shannon Meyer scored on a 6-on-4 situation, with assists from Hallie Paschke and Jamie Bisek, to make it a 2-1 game.

Brittney Sickmann started in goal for the Trojans and was relieved by Shyler Sletta. The Trojans stopped 16 of 18 shots.

New Prague's matchup with Simley in the consolation semifinals Tuesday, Dec. 30, followed a familiar theme, as the Trojans were not able to generate enough offense to take advantage of some good defensive play and stellar goaltending by Sletta. The sophomore stopped 24 of 25 shots she faced. The only goal of the game was scored by Simley in the first minute of the second period.

Trojans 3, Cardinals 2

The Trojans finally got some offense and also showed they could come from behind in the seventh place contest Wednesday, Dec. 31. Willmar scored the first goal of the game 10 minutes into the first period. The Trojans countered when Meyer scored on a Mariah Holicky assist just eight seconds into the second period. However, Willmar regained the lead and held a 2-1 advantage going into the final period.

Holicky scored at 1:36 of the third period to tie the game, then Meyer got the game-winner at 9:24, unassisted.

Sletta had another strong game, stopping 31 of 33 shots to pick up the win.
