Trojans win tourney with 21-hit outburst

The Trojan baseball team dropped a heart-breaker to Northfield last week, but rebounded with three wins, including a 21-hit, 13-run pounding over the host Huskies at the Owatonna Invitational.

New Prague was scheduled to play at Prior Lake Tuesday evening. On Thursday they host Shakopee, and they travel to Hutchinson Friday. They host two games next week, Faribault on Monday and Red Wing on Tuesday. On Thursday, May 5, they travel to Holy Angels.

Raiders 3, Trojans 2

New Prague squandered two bases-loaded opportunities and Northfield scored three runs in the sixth inning for a come-from-behind win over the Trojans Thursday, April 21, at New Prague.

Tyler Seurer scored both Trojan runs. He had a one-out single and scored on a base hit by Mike Goldsmith. He led of the fifth with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Bergstrom.

In the second inning, the first three runners reached base for the Trojans, but the Raiders got out of the inning when what would have been a wild pitch struck the bat of a Trojan hitter who was trying to get out of the way. The ball went into play, and the pitcher fielded the ball, stepped on the plate and threw to first for the double play. The next hitter struck out.

New Prague had the bases loaded and one out in the sixth when a grounder to the second baseman was bobbled, but the fielder clutched the ball against his chest while getting the force at second, then threw to first for an inning-ending double plays.

Josh Simon went the distance and took the loss, giving up seven hits and striking out five.

Seurer had two hits for the Trojans. Tony Kubes reached base three times, with a bunt single and a pair of walks.

Trojans 6, Tigers 1

A day after suffering their first loss of the season, the Trojans returned the favor and gave Farmington its first loss, 6-1 at Farmington.

The Trojans scored the game’s first run in the top of the fourth inning when Josh Simon singled and Tony Kubes walked. Nick Hertaus and Adam Gill both executed sacrifice bunts to drive in Simon,

The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the fourth, with a single, stolen base and a base hit producing the run.

The Trojans broke the game open in the top of the sixth. With one out, Hertaus and Gill both singled. Gill stole second. Seurer drove in a run with a two-out single, then stole second. Goldsmith followed with a two-run single. Eric Bisek drove in a run with a double, Bergstrom walked and Simon drove in a run with a base hit.

Bergstrom was impressive on the mound, striking out 12 and allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. He walked just one batter.

Trojans 6, Skippers 3

New Prague faced Minnetonka Saturday morning in the opening round of the Owatonna Invitational, and took a 6-3 win over the Skippers.

Minnetonka drew first blood with a run in the second, but the Trojans took a 2-1 lead when Bergstrom and Simon both singled and Kubes followed with a two-run double.

The Trojans made it 3-1 in the fifth, with Bergstrom singling and Simon getting hit by a pitch. Hertaus came up with a two-out single to bring Bergstrom home.

Minnetonka made it 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Trojans prevented further damage with a strikeout and a double play.

In the bottom of the sixth Seurer drew a one-out walk and Goldsmith singled. Bisek drew a walk to load the bases, and Bergstrom singled to drive in a run. Simon and Kubes both drove in runs to make it 6-3.

Minnetonka added a run in the seventh.

Ben Bartelt started and earned the complete game win. He scattered nine hits and allowed three runs, all earned, while striking out eight and allowing no walks.

April 23, at Owatonna

Trojans 13, Minutemen 3

New Prague pounded out 21 hits and scored 13 runs to defeat Owatonna 13-3 in the championship game at the Owatonna Invitational Saturday.

New Prague scored in every inning but the sixth. They were led by Simon, who went 5-for-5 and scored three runs. His performance upped his batting average to .810 (17 for 21) on the season, tops in the Metro area.

Goldsmith had four hits, while Seurer, Bisek, Kubes and Andy Shetka each had two.

Shetka got the win on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing just four hits while striking out six. Ryan Gebur pitched a perfect inning of relief.

The tournament went great
