Two local students earn Girl Scout Gold Award

Alise Ilkka and Vicky Erickson recently were awarded the Gold Award, the highest award offered through Girl Scouts.

Ilkka is a junior at New Prague High School, daughter of Greg and Cathy Ilkka. Her project was called The Gift of Reading. Alise worked closely with Parkview Medical Clinic and Faith Point Lutheran Church. She asked for donations from the local businesses for items to put into bags for the reading kits. The reading kits include several books, a stuffed animal, a letter to the parents, an activity idea to do with the kids, one Lullaby CD and more. She also made videos of her and others reading short books and upload them to You Tube for kids. Alise spent 108 hours on the project.

Erickson is also a junior at New Prague High School, daughter of Joel and JoAnn Erickson of Elko New Market. Her project was called Warming the Hearts of Others. She gathered fabric, personal care items and activity items. She held workshops to....
