Two Trojan teams headed to state

New Prague High School claimed two Section titles last week, and those teams will compete in state tournament action this week.

The New Prague's girls hockey team scored three goals in less than a minute midway through the second period to break open a close game and take an 8-1 win over Mankato West Thursday, Feb. 14. Kacy Ambroz had five goals for the Trojans, with Hallie Paschke, Sam Lijewski and Brooke Bartelt each adding one.

New Prague was scheduled to play at the Xcel Energy Center at 1 p.m. Wednesday against Roseau. The game was played after this edition of The New Prague Times went to press. If the Trojans win, they play at 11 a.m. Friday against either Alexandria or South St. Paul. If they lose Wednesday, they will play Thursday at 10 a.m. at Ridder Arena at the University of Minnesota.

The Trojan gymnastics team claimed the Section 2A title Friday evening. The Trojans scored 144.25 points, nearly eight points better than second-place Waconia.

In addition, seven Trojan athletes - Shelbie Johnson, Brittany Ellanson, Brooke Ellanson, Jess Hoffman, Laura Busch, Danielle Busch and Alysha Gareis - qualified for individual competition.

New Prague will compete at the State Class A team meet at 11 a.m. Friday at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul. Individual competition will take place Saturday.

Other Trojan teams are competing in post-season competition too. The wrestling team was eliminated Saturday in team competition, but will enter individual competition Friday and Saturday in Delano. The state wrestling tournament begins Feburary 27 at the Xcel Energy Center. The Trojan boys hockey team starts Section 1A play Thursday at home against Red Wing. New Prague's girls basketball team opens Section 1AAA play at home Wednesday against a team to be determined, and the boys basketball team starts Section play March 12.
