Verena M. Deutsch, age 90

Verena M. Deutsch, age 90, of Shakopee, formerly of St. Benedict, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, December 23, 2016, at Friendship Manor in Shakopee.

Verena was born January 11, 1926, in Belle Plaine Township, Scott County, MN to Peter and Anna (Bartusek) Neisen. She attended elementary school in Union Hill and New Prague High School.

Verena married Anthony J. “Tony” Deutsch in Union Hill on February 8, 1944. The couple made their home in St. Benedict, where they owned St. Benedict Tavern, which Verena managed while raising her two daughters. She always had a huge garden and did a lot of canning. In those early years, there were many fishing trips as a family and it was Verena’s job to manage the anchor!

Her daughters were both born the day after Christmas 5 years and 15 minutes apart! Verena was an avid seamstress and would dress the girls as twins for Christmas. Quilting and baseball were other favorite hobbies.

Verena is survived by her daughter, Diane (Roger) Brack of New Market; grandson, Aaron (Heather) Brack of West St. Paul; great-grandchildren, Annika and Caleb; sisters, Jane Busch of New Prague, Armella “Amy” (Joe) Holden, of New Prague. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tony Deutsch on May 15, 1999; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley (Joel) Haferman; son-in-law, Melvin Shea; brothers, Andrew Herman Neisen; sisters, Mary Ann Krautkremer and Clara Giesen.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, December 29, 2016, at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father Dave Barrett officiating. Visitation occurred Wednesday from 4- 8 PM and Thursday morning from 7:30-9:30 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home. Burial will occur at St. Benedict Cemetery followed by lunch at the KC Hall in New Prague.
