Veterans honored at high school program

By Patrick Fisher

The veterans who paid for the price of freedom, either by serving or with the ultimate sacrifice, were honored during a program at New Prague High School on Veteran’s Day, Thursday, Nov. 11.

Master of ceremonies Steve Collins, New Prague High School assistant principal, said that while America’s veterans helped pay for freedom, the costs they paid must be remembered.

The New Prague High School Band opened the event, held in the high school gym, with the medley, Salute to America’s Finest. The colors were presented by the New Prague Veterans Honor Guard. Also participating in the ceremony was the New Prague High School Choir.

In addition to students and school staff, there were area veterans and local officials from the city, county and state government. Among those present were New Prague Mayor Craig S. Sindelar, Scott County Commissioners Bob Vogel and Joe Wagner and State Representative Laura Brod (R-New Prague).

Collins recognized those veterans present, including school alumni, faculty members from the New Prague Area School District and all veterans living in the community who served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. Also recognized were the program’s two guest speakers, Major General Richard Nash of the Army National Guard and Petty Officer First Class David Blade of the United States Navy. Collins gave special recognition to New Prague resident Omer Krautkramer, a survivor of the bombing at Pearl Harbor.

Blade, who enlisted in the Navy on Veterans Day in 1996, was the first of the guest speakers to address the crowd. He said that what most people do in a day—go to school, work, drive home and participate in events—the ability to do all of that stuff is taken for granted.

All of those things veterans have protected and paid for with their service to their country.

That’s the only point I want to make today
