Voting: It's your duty as a citizen

Two-hundred and forty years ago, a group of patriots rose up against their homeland and started a revolution that changed the history of the world.

American colonists rebelled against England, upset with what they saw as unfair tax policies and heavy-handed measures being taken by the crown to keep the colonists in line.

"No taxation without representation" was one of the battle cries. Colonists, it should be noted, were not objecting to the principal of taxation, but they wanted a say in how the taxes were determined and how they were collected.

The leaders of the revolution pledged their lives and their fortunes to the new nation, The United States of America, and they prevailed in the war for independence. In the late 1700s, the 13 states adopted a Constitution to provide a framework for the government.

Part of that framework is the election of a President and Vice President every four years. The first elections were held in 1792, and George Washington was elected President. At first, the President was selected by a group of electors appointed by the state they represent. After about 30 years, the Constitution was amended so that citizens had the right to vote for the office of President.

Since then, every four years, the potential for a "New American Revolution" is held, as the nation decides on a new leader for the government. It is a right that people died for, and a right that should be cherished. It is your duty as a citizen to exercise that right. We encourage you to do so.
