Wagner, Malz to face off again

Scott County Commissioner Joe Wagner and former Commissioner Ralph Malz will face off for the third time after the two were the top vote-getters for the District 1 Commissioner's seat in Tuesday's primary election.

Wagner, a Jordan resident, defeated Malz, a two-term commissioner from Blakeley Township, in 1998. Malz challenged Wagner in 2002 and lost, and is challenging him again for the right to represent western Scott County.

Wagner received 699 votes, or 35.2 percent of the vote in the 5-person field. Malz received 524 votes, or 26.4 percent. Others in the race were Joe Thill of Jordan, 465 votes (23.4 percent), Ted Kornder of Belle Plaine, 238 votes (12.0 percent) and Dale Alice Kroc of Jordan, 60 votes (3.02 percent).

In District 3, which covers most of the city of Shakopee, incumbent Jerry Hennen finished on top of a five-way primary, getting 672 votes, or 51.61 percent. He will face Todd A. Anderson in the general election. Anderson received 267 votes, while Jerry Poole received 230, William P. Mars 104 and Kyle Tutsch 29.

There was one primary in Le Sueur County, in District 5, the southwestern corner of the county. Incumbent William (Bill) Stangler received 217 votes, or 58.0 percent of the vote. He will face Barron Grafing in the general election. Grafing had 88 votes, while Kris Holicky had 70.

In Rice County District 2 (Northfield area) top vote-getters in a four-way primary to replace Jessica Peterson, who is running for the state senate, were Betsey Buckheit with 446 votes (53.5 percent) and Galen Malecha, 213 votes (25.6 percent). David DeLong had 128 votes and William Rossman had 46 votes.

The only other area primary was in House District 35B, where incumbent Republican Mark Buesgens of Jordan fought off a challenge from former State Rep. Tom Rees of New Market Township. Buesgens had 914 votes (77.7 percent) while Rees had 263 votes (22.3 percent). Buesgens will face DFL'er Taylor Kristoffe Jones in the November general election.
