This weekend marks 20th Dozinky Festival

The celebration of New Prague’s Czech heritage is approaching quickly as final plans are in place for Dozinky, the community’s annual Czech Harvest Festival. The event this weekend will offer everyone plenty of fun and food.

Cruise on Friday

Starting things off will be the Classic Car Cruise on Friday night. The parade of vehicles, 1984 or older vintage, will take place on New Prague’s Main Street. The street will be closed to traffic and the vehicles will cruise the downtown area beginning at 6:30 p.m., head into the neighboring countryside and return to town. After the cruise, owners will be able to park their vehicles along Main Street so people can have a closer look. At 8 p.m. there will be a street dance on Central Avenue N.

Celebrate on Saturday

Saturday is the highlight of the weekend, as Main Street will remain closed so people can enjoy a variety of ethnic food, merchandise booths and entertainment. There will be music on stages set up next to McMahon’s Drug and Gifts, the Alliance Building and the Chamber of Commerce Beer Garden on Central Avenue N. as well as strolling musicians.

Among the musicians and dancers scheduled to perform are Russ Dietz & the Stray Cats, the Button Box 3, the Czech Area Concertina Club, Tim Chlan, the New Prague High School Polka Band, the Domaci Dancers, the New Prague Czech Singers, the St. Paul Czech & Slovak Dancers, John Novotny, the New Prague Community Band, the Little German Band and Glenn Wondra & the Country Gentlemen.

The strolling musicians along Main Street include Russ Dietz, Steve Bratka, Frank Shima, Claude Worthington and Ed and Ione Brezina.

Other entertainment includes a petting zoo, a Bingo tent near the beer garden and steam train rides offered by the Gopher State Railway Museum.

At noon the Parade of Farm Pride will be held on Main Street. A variety of farm equipment, floats, and organizations will be taking part in the parade. Grand Marshals for this year’s parade are Arnie and Ann Schoenbauer of New Prague.

Other activities include a Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull at the Strike Force Bowl parking lot at 1 p.m. Artists’ Alley will feature a variety of local artists and interactive art for children from 1-4 p.m. between ReRuns Specialty Products/Gardner & Gardner Communications and Miller’s Tap. Immediately following the parade will be a Concertina Fest at Town’s Edge Restaurant.

Several sporting events will be held throughout the day, including the annual alumni softball and volleyball tournaments and a tug-of-war tournament, all at Memorial Park. (The softball tournament concludes on Sunday.)

Saturday evening will be the Wells Fargo Bank-Dozinky Variety Show at the New Prague High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The show will feature 20 acts from around the area with a wide variety of entertainment.
