What a winter season!
What a season this has been for New Prague High School Sports.
Of the six winter teams that the school sponsors, five of the teams are or have been ranked in the top 10 in the state this season. The sixth, meanwhile, boys hockey - has been in the top 20 and for the first time ever has won the Missota Conference title.
In addition, the school will have a representative at the State Nordic Ski meet today (Thursday). Maria Berg placed sixth at the Section 1 meet in Apple Valley last week and will compete. She is the daughter of Dr. Mark and Julie Berg of New Prague.
Three teams will try to punch their tickets to the state tournament over the next three days. On Thursday, the girls hockey team, ranked No. 8 in state, will face No. 3 Red Wing in Owatonna. That game is scheduled for 5 p.m. New Prague is seeking its fifth trip to the tournament.
The gymnastics team will try for its 16th trip to state at the Section 2A meet Friday in Watertown. New Prague is considered a heavy favorite and is ranked No. 2 in Class A.
On Saturday, the Trojan wrestling team will compete for the Section 2AA crown, assuming they advance out of the quarterfinals on Thursday. New Prague is ranked No. 4 in Class AA and is the top seed in a very strong section.
In the coming weeks, we will see the boys hockey team try to make its first-ever trip to the state meet. To do so, they will may have to beat a Mankato West team that beat them in the opening game of the season and a Rochester Lourdes team that has beaten them twice this year.
The girls basketball team is ranked No. 8 in state and has two tough teams in Mankato East and Marshall to contend with in Section 2AAA.
The boys basketball team has been in and out of the top 10 this season. They are hoping to get another shot at Austin in the Section 1AAA finals. The Packers are No. 2 in the state and defeated the Trojans in last year’s finals on a last-second alley-oop slam dunk.
And let’s not forget the adapted floor hockey team. They are 5-0 at the halfway point in the season.
There could be a few trips to state tournaments coming up for me in the next month.
