William Pelant, 83

William Eugene Pelant, 83, of Northfield, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, with his wife and family by his side.

He was born August 23, 1927, on the family farm in Webster Township, Rice County, a son of William J. and Rose (Hanek) Pelant. He attended country school and Northfield High School. Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in France, Germany and Belgium during the occupation after WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Webster and worked on the farm and at the Arsenal in New Brighton. He married Caroline Flicek on June 3, 1952, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lonsdale. Along with farming, Bill worked construction, installing water and sewer in what are now many of the southern suburbs. He worked at Thermo-King for almost 25 years, retiring in 1990. Bill and Caroline moved to Kildahl Park Point in Northfield in July 2008. He was a member of the Church of St. Dominic and a former longtime member of the Church of the Annunciation in Hazelwood. He was also a member of the Catholic Workman, the Lonsdale American Legion and the United Steel Workers. Bill enjoyed polka and country music, playing cards, flowers, being outdoors, coin collecting and genealogy.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years; children Charles (Diane), Red Wing, James (Shirley), Burnsville, Lawrence (Barbara), Webster, Richard, Faribault, Geralyn (Jim) Jeffrey, Elk River, William III, Washington, DC and Susan (Nathan) Owen, Olympia, WA; 14 grandchildren Nicole, Andrea and Derrik Pelant, Jeff Pelant, Diana (Brian) Connelly, Lisa (Brian) LaMarche, Laura and Ryan Pelant, David and Daniel Vita, Mark and Stephanie Jeffrey, Trevor and Connor Owen; five great-grandchildren Danica, Payton, Keshaun, DeVante and Philip; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Matthew; his parents; a brother Alvin; and a sister Evelyn Adamek.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield, with Rev. Dennis Dempsey officiating. Interment with military honors will be at the Annunciation Catholic Cemetery in Hazelwood. Casket bearers will be Nicole Pelant, Andrea Pelant, Derrik Pelant, Jeff Pelant, Diana Connelly, Lisa LaMarche, Laura Pelant, Ryan Pelant, David Vita and Daniel Vita. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral.

Memorials are preferred to the VA or the Church of St. Dominic.
