Wounded wrestlers take 2nd at Tartan

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team has been hit with the injury bug, with five potential starters out of the lineup for much of this past week’s matches. The wounded include Sam Reyant, Brennan Rutt, Nick Knutson and Nic Arguedas. Knutson, ranked No. 2 in the Class AA at 170 pounds, had surgery on his ankle and it is not known if he will return in time for the post-season.

Coach Greg Tikalsky said the team has to keep focused on its goals for the end of the season and cannot allow the week to define who they are as a team or individual wrestlers.

“Years ago I ran across an adage that keeps me focused on the goal - ‘It's always darkest before the dawn.’ These situations really demand we bring our best and they help us discover what we're made of.”

The Trojans (No. 8, Class AA) won two of five matches over a three-day span last week. They lost duals to Waconia (No. 4, Class AA) on Thursday, Jan. 14, and Prior Lake (No. 5, Class AAA) on Friday, Jan. 15, then on Saturday, Jan. 16, they took second place in the Titan Duals at Tartan in Oakdale, where they defeated Tartan and Becker before losing to Grand Rapids.

“Looking forward, we host a couple of top-rated teams in St. Michael-Albertville (No. 2, Class AAA), Shakopee (No. 6, Class AAA) and section opponent Watertown- Mayer.

“We realize these teams will present big challenges to us, they'll require our best effort, that's valuable experience leading up to the section meet.”
