Wrestlers take second at home invitational

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team got off to a good start Saturday. The Trojans won three matches in pool play to advance to the championship match of the New Prague Invitational, where they lost to Owatonna, ranked No. 5 in Class AAA, by a 57-13 score.

The Trojans will wrestle at Robbinsdale Armstrong in a dual Thursday, Dec. 11. On Saturday, Dec. 13, New Prague competes in the Chaska Invitational. Other teams scheduled to compete are Buffalo, Champlin Park, Chaska, Hopkins, Mankato West, Minnetonka and Owatonna. On Thursday, Dec. 18, New Prague will compete in a triangular meet with Minnehaha Academy at South St. Paul High School. The Trojans take on Minnehaha at 6:15 p.m. and South St. Paul at 7:30 p.m.

Trojans 38, Saints 32

New Prague opened its season and its tournament facing St. Peter, a team they lost to in their season-opener last year. This time the Trojans used five pins to put together a strong showing as they defeated the Saints 38-32.

After falling behind 7-0, the Trojans won four straight matches. At 119 pounds Aaron Redding pinned Nick Rydell, ranked No. 9 in the state, in 1 minute, 50 seconds. Morgan Parriott followed with a 10-5 decision at 125 pounds to give New Prague a 9-7 lead. Alex Minette scored a technical fall at 130, and Kody Dolezal scored an easy pin at 135 in 1:44. In that match, he took down his opponent five times and released him the first four to build a 10-4 lead before getting the pin. At that point the Trojans led 20-7.

After a St. Peter pin, the Trojans' Andy Reinartz countered with a fall in 1:46. He built up a 10-3 lead before getting the pin, making the score 26-13.

The Saints won the next three matches to pull even at 26-26, but the Trojans were strong down the stretch as Zach Molitor scored a fall in 4:59 and Jay Reinke followed with a pin at 1:03. The Saints won the final match, but the Trojans took the 38-32 win.

Trojans 46, Gophers 21

New Prague was the beneficiary of 30 points via forfeit as they took an easy 46-21 win.

On the mat, The Trojans won only three matches on the mat, with Redding and Minette each scoring pins and Dolezal getting a major decision. Forfeit wins came from Natalie Rutt (112 pounds), Reinartz, Alex Mueller (160), Reinke and Evan Beranek (285).

Trojans 44, Wildcats 24

New Prague had its most impressive showing of the day in a 44-24 win over Eagan. The Trojans led 11-9 on a fall from Rutt and a technical fall from Redding, then they won five straight matches, three of them by fall, to grab a 35-9 lead.

Minette started the run with a 12-6 win at 130, then Dolezal pinned his opponent at 135. Logan Giles had an impressive win at 140 pounds, getting a pin in 2:48. Reinartz scored a fall in 1:49 at 145 pounds and Jesse Cole scored a 7-3 decision at 152.

Other wins for the Trojans were by Molitor, 8-6 at 189, and Reinke in a fall at 3:30.

Huskies 57, Trojans 13

Things were looking good for the Trojans against Owatonna, as they led 13-11 after five matches. After spotting the Huskies an 11-0 lead, Redding followed with a major decision, 14-5 at 119 against Dillon Schultz, who is ranked No. 5 in the state. Parriott followed with a fall at 125 and Minette took a 10-3 decision at 130.

That would be it for the Trojans though, as Owatonna won the final nine matches to take 57-13 win. The final four matches were all by first period falls.
